Christmas is a Christian feast commemorating Jesus’ birth. Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is a very new English phrase. Yule may have originated from the Germanic jl or the Anglo-Saxon gel, which both referred to the winter solstice feast. Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, and Noel in French are all likely to mean nativity in other languages. Weihnachten is a German word that means “holy night.”
Christmas has also been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike since the early twentieth century, devoid of Christian elements and marked by an increasingly elaborate gift exchange. Santa Claus, a mythical figure, plays a central role in this secular Christmas celebration.
Is Christmas the Day of Jesus’ Birth?
Easter was the most important event in early Christianity; the birth of Jesus was not commemorated. Church leaders agreed to make the birth of Jesus a holiday in the fourth century. Regrettably, the Bible makes no indication of his birth date (a fact Puritans later pointed out in order to deny the legitimacy of the celebration). Although some evidence shows Jesus was born in the spring (why would shepherds be herding sheep in the dead of winter? ), Pope Julius I selected December 25 as his birthday. It is widely assumed that the church picked this date in an attempt to assimilate and absorb the pagan Saturnalia festival’s customs. The Feast of the Nativity was first celebrated in Egypt in 432, and by the end of the sixth century, it had extended to England.

So when was jesus born
There’s a compelling and practical reason why Jesus should have been born in the spring or fall rather than the winter! It may become quite cold in the winter, and shepherds are unlikely to have kept sheep out on the hills (especially because those slopes can get quite a bit of snow!).
The Jewish celebration of ‘Passover’ takes place in the spring (March or April). This holiday commemorates the Jews’ emancipation from Egyptian slavery roughly 1500 years before Jesus’ birth. During the Passover Festival, a large number of lambs would have been required to be sacrificed at the Temple in Jerusalem. The Passover Festival brought Jews from all over the Roman Empire to Jerusalem, thus it would have been a suitable opportunity for the Romans to take a census. For the census, Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem (approximately six miles away).
Therefore, Jesus must have been born between august and October.

The birth of Christ is commemorated at Christmas. This is a moment for us to reflect on and grasp Jesus’ messages. Jesus introduced a new religion based on love and the vision of a compassionate and forgiving God; a vision of approaching everything with a positive attitude and from a position of love.
